VENEX Participates in the 2026 United Nations High‑Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), Supporting Sustainable Transport for International Shipping

22 July 2026

Recently, the event “Advancing the United Nations Decade of Sustainable Transport (2026–2035): Partnerships, Data-Driven Solutions and Coordinated Action for Accelerating the 2030 Agenda” was held at the UN headquarters in New York.

The event was jointly organised by the Permanent Mission of Turkmenistan to the United Nations, the Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations, and the Global Sustainable Transport Innovation and Knowledge Center (GSTIKC). Opening remarks were delivered by Ms. Bjørg Sandkjær, Assistant Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations, Mr. Vepa Hajiyev, Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan to the United Nations, and Mr. Sun Lei, Deputy Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations.

At the event, Mr. Sham Man-fai, Chief Operating Officer – Green Fuels and Chemicals and Group Chief Technology Officer of The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas), shared the Group’s experience in transforming conventional coal chemical production into green methanol for transport fuel.

As an active contributor to China's sustainable transport development, Towngas was among the first companies to receive certification under the Global Sustainable Transport Certification (GSTC) framework. At its Inner Mongolia production base, Towngas' joint venture, VENEX, applies the Group's proprietary technology to convert waste tyres and agricultural and forestry residues into low-carbon green methanol. By maintaining the highest standards in green fuel production and operations, the company is delivering on its commitment to the green and low-carbon transformation.

Meanwhile, VENEX continues to expand its production capacity and distribution network while deepening cooperation with partners across the port, shipping, energy, and chemical sectors. Aligned with China's Dual Carbon strategy, the company is supporting the sustainable transition of the global shipping industry and advancing the transition to low-carbon transport through the production and wider adoption of green methanol.

The event received extensive coverage from leading media outlets, including Xinhua News Agency, China Media Group (CMG), China Daily, China News Service, and Phoenix TV.
